Tulum Travel Journal: Day One
Day 1 - Dec 24 - Travel Day
For Christmas, I gave Drew a scuba certification course so that he could learn how to dive in Mexico! We flew Charleston to Cancun on Christmas Eve, then drove 2 hours south to Tulum where we would spend the next few days exploring ancient Mayan Ruins, swimming in cenotes, biking down the beach, and scuba diving with bull sharks!
We had a lot of trouble with our flights this trip - Delta overbooked our Cancun flight, and we got kicked off the flight without any notification or reimbursement. After a lot of stressful calls to their customer service, we finally got our reservation sorted out. We made it to Tulum in one piece late in the evening.
We ate dinner at Mezzanine, a Thai restaurant on the beach near our hotel. I had a delicious refreshing shrimp salad with coconut, mango, and watermelon. Drew got the Drunken Noodles which were served in a banana leaf. The sky was dark and filled with stars, and a swift ocean breeze carried the mist and the sound of the beach washed over us. The ambiance felt so relaxing after traveling all day, with woven wood lamps overhead and glittering pools of water sprinkled around the hotel. We ordered two bottles of water, which turned out to be quite expensive when we saw the bill, but I guess it was miracle water because my killer headache from a stressful day of traveling vanished after we drank it!
